SENTENCE



Sentences are a group of words. A sentence is made up of phrases and comprises one or more clauses. phrases are groups of words that are used together to express a certain idea; clauses are phrases that contain a verb.

Examples in German:

I am Wilmer.
Ich bin Wilmer.

When we have more money, we will buy a big car.
Wenn wir mehr Geld haben, kaufen wir ein großes Auto.

Dennis has a white cat, but she would like a black dog.
Dennis hat eine weiße Katze, aber sie möchte einen schwarzen Hund.

Simple Sentences:

I know. (main clause)
Ich weiß.

Compound Sentences:

I know but they know also. (two main clauses)
Ich weiß aber sie wissen auch.

Complex Sentences:

I know that they know. (main clause/sub. Clause)
Ich weiß daß sie wissen.

Compound Complex Sentences:

I know and they know that I know.
(two main clauses/subordinate clause)
Ich weiß und sie wissen daß ich weiß.

Different kinds of Sentences:

Declarative Sentences:

I'm going home.
Ich gehe nach Hause.

Imperative Sentences:

Go home!
Hause!

Interrogative Sentences:

Are you going home!
Gehst du (Gehen Sie) nach Hause?

Where do you go?
Wohin geht ihr?

What wine is this?
Welcher Wein ist das?

Negative Sentences:

This is not an expensive book.
Das ist kein teures Buch.

You do not go into the hotel.
Ihr geht nicht in das Hotel.
